COUNTESS' VILLA
Villa of the Countess of Berkeley for sale in the historic center of Assisi with great historical-artistic value. Framed by the Rocca Maggiore and the Minore, overlooking the cathedral of San Rufino and the Valle del Lupo, Villa della Contessa represents a unique example in the Umbrian panorama. The history of the villa begins in 1300, when it was the seat of the Confraternity of San Lorenzo, and reached the height of its splendor when the property passed into the hands of the Countess of Berkeley who, having fallen madly in love with Assisi, purchased it in 1933 and made it a artistic cenacle frequented by the most important artistic personalities of the time. A large gate, which allows access to the villa, with a large wooden door surmounted by a fresco by Cola Petruccioli (circa 1394).
The external space is divided into various levels whose passages are enriched by flower beds and evidence of the history of the place. From a first level adjacent to the entrance, where the bottom of a medieval apse is perfectly visible, you reach a large terraced floor with a fountain with Roman elements, panoramic corners with tables and seats and a hydromassage tub equipped with a water heating with a view of one of the most beautiful Romanesque facades, the cathedral of San Rufino.
The internal space develops longitudinally starting from a large hall covered by the original terracotta flooring coming from the Upper Basilica of San Francesco, then passing through another hall, the kitchen, a library up to a very bright dining room. On the west side, an ogival arch opens the passage to a hallway that leads to the sacristy of an old deconsecrated medieval church, now used as an engraving room. In the same wing, going up the stairs are the three bedrooms, all with private bathrooms and two of which with fireplaces. The master bedroom on the top floor has a 15m2 panoramic terrace overlooking the Rocca Maggiore, the Rocchicciola and the Valle del Lupo. The wooden ceilings (some painted), the ancient doors, the floors, underline the research and attention to detail in the furnishings of the Villa which the Countess considered her masterpiece. The property includes a 60m2 garage with direct access from the outside.
Given the importance and prestige of the Villa della Contessa, upon request, it is possible to have a complete information brochure with photos and detailed descriptions on the history of the property.
